President's Report

 Ovidiu Muresan

Thank you all for attending our first meeting of 2019-2020 season. I hope everyone had a good time at our new venue and the attendance will increase meeting by meeting. We are planning the December meeting to be a social event, stay tuned for future details.

We are starting a new program to increase our meeting attendance. If you bring a new engineer (a coworker) member or non-member you will be awarded with a door prize. Let us know at registration who are you bringing and I’ll give you a door prize during the meeting.

Alongside the monthly meetings our next events will be: 2019 December social (date and details will be announced soon), March 9th, 2020 Product Show, and a late spring 2020 Golf outing.

The Board is continuing to help young professional to join the ASPE. If you’re a young professional plumbing engineer and you want to join ASPE, please let me know we may be able to help.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions at [email protected].

Please email me directly with any questions and/or suggestions and I’ll try to answer them. If some of the topics become hot items we’ll have an open forum and discuss them at our monthly meetings.

VP Technical Report

 Dennis M Connelly

Hello Friends and members of ASPE, plumbers, and engineers everywhere!

Welcome to Autumn in Atlanta! Yes, it’s Fall; although you must check the calendar instead of the thermometer to tell. For all who love endless summer, here it is, probably through the end of the month. I recall last year sweating through Trunk or Treat at the church and after being named as the hottest (pick your month) since March. We’ll be the same this Halloween!

October is here! Who needs October baseball anyway? Our home team got us a bit excited, but reality is cruel. Our football team is looking like their OLD selves, snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory! Our other football team made a good showing, so we can still hope as we wait for our next game in the playoffs. We can always look to the reliable college teams for excitement on the field.

Did you make it to our meeting last month? If not, you missed a good one. It’s a good thing we have another on tap for this month. Our meeting place, DoubleTree by Hilton, is very nice and the food is good. Please take advantage of your membership in ASPE and join us for good fellowship and education to help you gain and retain your professional status.

This month we are welcoming Brendan Gardes, PE, LEED AP, Director, Energy and Sustainability for Newcomb & Boyd. He is extremely knowledgeable and qualified; holds PE license in Mechanical and Electrical and is very active in sustainability efforts in and around our community. He’s married with elementary and middle school daughters. The family loves adventures in the outdoors, including backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. He rides his bike 8 miles to work to reduce his carbon footprint, but secretly he’s been ogling electric scooters as alternative transport.

Brendan will be updating us about the code changes that will be coming in force in Georgia in January 2020. International Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes-2018, and International Energy Conservation Code-2015. He will also give us an update on LEED v4, which is the current standard of design for sustainability. There is a lot of good info to be shared, so mark your calendar for October 22 and join us.

ASPE has a lot of activities and education on the horizon. Our ASPE Connect feature has been a real success story, and I have seen several of my ATL peers on that chat board. Of course, the Technical Symposium is just around the corner in Pittsburgh PA on October 24 – 27. Then in February 2020, the ASPE CPD Review Course and practice exam will be held in Atlanta at the offices of Newcomb & Boyd. If you are looking for education and opportunities to learn, you’re in the right place! Stay tuned.

We have mentioned in earlier newsletters that we are trying to return to our “regular” ASPE schedule this year. We are planning for a golf outing this year, but maybe not until the spring. A Product Show will return this year, and there is even some murmuring about a Clay Shoot. These are great plans to get us back in the groove, so stay tuned here for the latest. One thing we are hoping to do this year is bring back our December Social. We have always had a great time with that and are hoping to make it happen this year. No technical presentation, just fellowship with our friends and loved ones. Check the newsletter as we get closer for details.

That’s all for me today! I hope you are enjoying our newsletter and Chapter activities. If you are, please let us know; we like a pat on the back. If you’re not happy, let us know that too; we can respond to kick in the pants as well!

We are excited to get back to ASPE and will look for you there! Until then, stay cool!

Affiliate Liaison's Report

It finally feels like fall out there and before we know it winter will be upon us. Speaking of winter, be on the lookout for information about the ASPE Winter Social that we will be having in December in leu of a normal dinner/technical presentation. If any affiliates are interested in being a sponsor for the event feel free to reach out and let me or member of the board know.

I would like to thank all the people who attended the dinner last month at the new location. Personally, I think it will be a good spot for us the rest of the year and will be a great location for the ASPE Product on show March 9th, 2020. Any affiliates wanting information about the show please reach out. We will be sharing more information as the date gets closer.

Due to scheduling and the fact that time got away from us we are going to have to push the golf outing back to the spring. Right now, we are looking at early May, but do not have a confirmed date. We will be distributing information once we have a date and more details ironed out.

The Affiliate Members should have received an email from me with a link to a brief survey to just give us an overview of how the chapter is doing. I would appreciate as many responses as possible so we can try to make sure everyone feels like they are getting benefits from the chapter. The link to the survey is below anyone is open to fill it out, but a little later in the year we will be sending out a survey geared more towards the engineering community to get their thoughts.

Survey can be seen at:

As always if anyone is interested in one of our tabletops, a submission for the Affiliate’s Corner, sponsoring an event, or advertising in this newsletter or on the website please let us know and we will get you the requested details.

Thank you and I hope to see you at the upcoming session!
