VP Technical Report

 Dennis M Connelly

Hello Friends and members of ASPE, and plumbers and engineers everywhere!

November already! The year is quickly ending. This has been an incredibly busy year for me, from start to finish, at least as far as I can see. We are getting some large projects into construction, so it looks like more of the same to start next year as well. I hope everyone has had a part of this plenty and we can all close 2019 in good shape.

Since I mentioned projects in construction, be aware if you have projects in Atlanta, the codes will change on January 1. I know they are currently experiencing a rapid increase of projects submitting for permit before the end of year. We understand that the City is not planning to increase staffing, so there is a projected backlog that has been unofficially estimated at 4-6 weeks. That will be the end of 2019, but we can expect that backlog, and a learning curve, for the first part of 2020 as reviewers start using the new codes.

Last month I was honored to represent of Atlanta Chapter at the Technical Symposium in Pittsburgh. It was a great event; the most attended symposium since Atlanta set the record almost 20 years ago. This event is an opportunity for investment in your career with networking and educational offerings on timely industry topics. There’s also a great product show and good fellowship with old and new friends. It can be a significant expense, but I was attending as a representative of the chapter. The next symposium will be in San Diego in two years, and of course, our Convention in New Orleans next year. Attending these events are additional benefits to be an officer in the local ASPE Chapter. (That’s a hint!)

Another benefit of ASPE membership is the ability to earn the CPD designation. I have been CIPE, and then CPD for over 30 years, and I can honestly say that my career has benefited from that. This is recognized inside our industry and now more and more throughout the engineering and construction industry as a significant achievement indicating knowledge and expertise in the field. Registration for the 2020 CPD exam will open December 1 and close March 19, 2020 for the exam, administered March 30 – April 5, 2020.

The Atlanta Chapter will have our regular monthly dinner meeting and technical program on Tuesday, November 19, at The DoubleTree by Hilton, Atlanta Perimeter, Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. This is a great opportunity to network with peers, industry professionals and our great affiliates, who support us all with products support and knowledge. If you’re an engineer and bring a guest engineer; you’ll win a door prize! How about that for a deal!

Our technical presentation this month will be discussing design of piping systems using thermoplastic piping.  Our guest presenter will be Jonathan Cooper, an application engineer for IPEX who provides technical support for industrial and plumbing projects. Jonathan is a North Carolina native and mechanical engineering graduate from UNC Charlotte. He has several years of varied mechanical engineering project experience before joining IPEX. He is well qualified and will provide and interesting and highly technical program. If you have questions about thermoplastic piping this is the show you won’t want to miss.

Looking ahead, our December Social is on track. We will gather for fun and fellowship with our friends and loved ones. More details to come in this newsletter.

That’s all for me today! I hope you are enjoying our newsletter and Chapter activities. If you are, please let us know; we like a pat on the back. If you’re not happy, let us know that too; we can respond to kick in the pants as well!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Affiliate Liaison's Report

rodger nodine

Hello Again,

I hope everyone is having a great November and that the weather change didn’t catch anyone too off guard. I would like to personally thank everyone who filled out the survey I sent out last month. By filling out the survey and giving us your opinions, we are better able to make an ASPE experience that is beneficial to all its members.

The ASPE Winter Social is confirmed for Friday Dec. 13th at the Perimeter Double Tree. Please mark it on your calendars and we will be releasing more details and registration information shortly. The price will be the same as the monthly meeting that it will take the place of, however, it also includes a +1. If any affiliates would like to know about sponsorship details let the board know.

Another upcoming event the 2019-2020 product show is scheduled for March 9th. Be on the lookout for information and registration details so you can reserve your spot early.

The November dinner meeting on the 19th looks to be an interesting one with the technical session being on Designing Piping Systems Using Thermoplastic Materials. We still have a tabletop available for the show if interested let me or member of the board know and we can get you the details.

As always if there is anything I can help with contact me at [email protected] and I hope you have a great week.
