President's Report

 Julie Hadfield

Hello All,

Our September meeting will be on September 29th via Zoom. It will work like the last couple meetings that we had last year. We will be sending out the meeting invite with the link to register soon.

For those of you interested in taking the Certified Plumbing Design Technician (CPDT) exam, the registration is now open for the October 5-18 exam. The exam will be held online similar to how the CPD was held a couple of months ago. This is a great opportunity for those who do not have enough experience to sit for the CPD exam.

We will be giving out our scholarship again this year. If you know of any high school seniors or collage age students. The application is up in the education page on the website. Reza has sent out flyers to local schools to help drum up interest.  We know the scholarship can make a big difference to a student and committed to help out now more than ever.

Even though we are not having in person meetings, there are still many benefits to membership that I hope you are taking advantage of. In addition to our monthly digital meeting, you have access to attend other chapters meetings and a variety of webinars hosted by Society. You also have access to the ASPE Connect message board. This is a fantastic resource of engineers all over the country at your fingertips.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact me.

September 2020

Greetings to Friends, Families and Associates of ASPE Atlanta!

September! The year is flying away before our eyes! It’s amazing how time has flown this year, and yet, we mostly have not seen each other for 6 months or more! I realize that we are doing our best to re-open where we can. Many of our contractor and affiliate friends are mostly back to work, but most of the engineering side has been working from home, unless they need to make a site visit. I must say that I miss the camaraderie of the office, but I am really getting used to my 2-minute commute to my Basement World Plumbing Headquarters.

While much of our industry has been able to return to work, our economy is still struggling and our nation is still in serious pain and suffering from this terrible virus that has now killed almost 200,000 of our citizens, friends, relatives, neighbors. Please keep your prayers focused on how we can pull together to defeat this terrible scourge, and how you may help those who have been the worst affected.

Amid the horrors of the pandemic, we watch in equal horror as the western half of our nation burns with incredible wildfires, while in the east and south, the Atlantic has given us 28 named storms and several major hurricane landfalls that have devastated communities beyond recognition, and there is still two months left in the season! I truly think there is something going on with this climate change that we cannot ignore any longer. It has become critical!

And do not forget, in just 6 weeks, we have local, state, and federal elections. Be sure to make your plans now to get out and vote! Vote early, vote by mail, or vote on November 3, but do not miss this chance at your civic duty.

We all continue to adapt to life in pandemic as best we can. I hope all who follow Atlanta ASPE are safe and healthy. Just this past week, the Society held the business portion of our 2020 Convention and Exposition. This great event was canceled for in-person attendance due to the Coronavirus but was scheduled for New Orleans. Such a shame! However, we welcome the new Society Board of Directors, including Jim Zebrowski, from Atlanta Chapter, who is the new VP Education. Our Region 3 also has representation from Alabama (President Carol Johnson and Treasurer Blair Minyard), and Charlotte (VP Affiliate Tom Sharp). We also have a new Region 3 Director, Curtis Ray from Central Florida, which means that our own Steve Mastley has hung up his spurs for now. Please be sure to reach out to Steve and thank him for all the years of dedicated support of ASPE, the Atlanta Chapter and Region 3. Thank you, Steve.  Another special congratulations and thanks go to Joe Messina, our own long-serving past President and Board member; Society has awarded him the Donald F. Dickerson Founder’s Award, for his lifetime achievements, dedication and the promotion of the Society, its mission and the profession. This is a well deserved and significant honor for a man who has given so much to our Society, our Region and our Chapter. Thank you Joe, and congratulations!

September brings the return of Atlanta ASPE activities. Sadly, we are still unable to meet in person. But we will continue to have technical presentations via Zoom Meeting so our members can continue to grow and our CPD and CDPT members can continue to track their education for recertification. This month, we are pleased to present Carmen Gonzales to present our program. Carmen is Western States Regional Sales Manager for Franke Commercial; a manufacturer of various products including kitchen and healthcare-related equipment. Hailing from Puerto Rico, where she attended the University of Puerto Rico, Carmen has been involved in the plumbing industry for over 17 years. She was the Region 4 Women of ASPE Liaison for 2017-2019 and continues to serve ASPE in various ways. For our presentation, Carmen will provide our presentation – Engineered Infection Prevention; using technology to address challenges to infection control in healthcare facilities. Our meeting will be Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00. The link to join is below.

That’s about all the news I have today. You can always reach me at [email protected] to talk about ASPE, plumbing, or whatever is on your mind. Drop me a note!

Happy End of Summer!

CPDT testing is right around the corner. Testing will be from October 5-18th, 2020. Be sure to register by October 8th, 2020. The qualifications required to test are located here: https://www.aspe.org/education-credentialing/cpdt/cpdtexam/

Get your CPDT Study Guide here: https://www.aspe.org/product/cpdt-study-guide/

Our chapter’s Education tab has been updated with information on the CPDT, CPD and an informative brochure aimed at new members.
