Hello All,
Our February meeting will be on February 23th via Zoom. You will be receiving an invite with the link to register for the meeting this afternoon. The meeting is hosted by ASPE Education (on aspe.org). You must register through them to attend the meeting. Click on the link in the invite, register for the Atlanta Chapter Meeting, and log in to your account to complete the process. You will get a confirmation email and an email closer to the meeting with a link to the presentation. You can also access the presentation by going directly to the Education section of ASPE.org. The website closes registration before the event, so be sure to register at least a day beforehand. Once it is closed, we don’t have the ability to add you in. If you have any questions or problems, reach out to a member of the board.
As a reminder, the Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam registration is now open. Registration deadline is April 8 with the exam being April 5-16.
The 2021 Technical Symposium will be September 21-26 in San Diego, California. Mark your calendars!
Dennis Connelly will be presenting to a Fulton County class for Career Day this coming week. If you are doing something similar or anything for Engineering Week, let us know. It helps with the Chapter Award of Merit.
I want to point out two member benefits that you may not be on your radar. ASPE education has many opportunities to get CEUs and continue to learn new skills while being socially distant. First, there are many on demand webinars to choose whatever strikes your fancy. The second is the Read, Learn, Earn program. CEUs are awarded after reading an article and completing the quiz.
ASPE also offered the Book of the Month benefit for members. Each month there is a discount on a different book from the ASPE bookstore.
As always, don’t hesitate to contact me.

February 2021
Greetings to Friends, Families and Associates of ASPE Atlanta!
Happy February; Happy Groundhog Day; Happy Valentines; Happy Fat Tuesday!! We are busy, busy and have just gotten started! That’s the way things are starting for me this year; projects rolling in and plenty already on the table. WOW! Looks like it will be a busy year. I hope all my peers out there are getting the same at your place.
I am sorry to miss our meeting last month, but I was driving to Massachusetts to deliver my daughter to her new position. That was an interesting drive; I had some fun in the freezing cold, but I am glad to be back where winter days actually get above freezing!
Since the first of the year, the nation’s Covid numbers are finally starting to subside. We are working through the holiday surge finally, people are getting back to masks and social separation, and we have new leadership in Washington putting more emphasis on science and cooperation, plus the vaccine is finally getting into arms around the country and world. I got my first shot last week, so I am optimistic about our outlook. Now if we can just make headway with vaccinations and limit new cases so we can get ahead of the variants going around. Like you all, I am very much looking forward to being able to meet you all in person.
This is another busy year for ASPE Society. Planning has started for the Technical Symposium on September 22-26 in San Diego, CA! There is a call for papers for that session, so this is your opportunity to share your new idea or product to a hungry audience. There is even a contest to win a trip to that show.
The CPD Exam us coming around again and registration is now open through April 8, 2021. The exam will be held via remote proctor from April 5 – 16, 2021. This is a great program that I highly recommend. I can honestly say that being a CPD has been a great boost to my career through the years. Not only that, but there is also a fabulous review class, complete with mock exams to get you ready. You really cannot lose.
Our February ASPE Technical Presentation is just around the corner as well. We will meet, virtually, on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00 pm. We will be welcoming Richard Rossi with Niagara who will be reviewing the latest low flow technology for toilets and showers, along with updating current trends in water conservation. I’m looking forward to this presentation, so please mark your calendars and plan to join us.
In closing, I want to remind us all that we are all better when we reach out and communicate. One of the best communications tools you have is the Atlanta ASPE website and the Newsletter. Not only do you get timely articles (like this one), but you can find the contacts for products and people that make your work better. You support your society as well, even if we do not get to see each other’s smiling faces. Be sure to check us out.
In fact, this week I was reminded of another benefit to ASPE membership, when I received a letter and resume from an engineer in California who is relocating to our area. He was reaching out in advance to get his resume on the market, which is something any member can do, networking through our Society. It is a great additional benefit, so be sure to return your membership dues right away.
That is all the news I have today. You can always reach me at [email protected] to talk about ASPE, plumbing, or whatever is on your mind. Drop me a note! Whether you are staying in or going out, please be safe. Wear your mask, wash your hands, cover your sneeze, and keep your distance wherever possible. I really do want to see everyone again in the future.

VP Legislative Report
RUFUS KAY
Hello, ASPE members and friends! I want to start off in hoping that everyone is off to a great February and remaining safe. And because February is Black History Month, I would like to share with you two African American inventors and their contributions to American history.
First, I would like to introduce you to Granville T. Woods (April 23, 1856 – Jan. 30, 1910). He was known to many as the “Black Edison” since both were great inventors of their time. He invented more than a dozen devices to improve electric railway cars and is most noted for an invention that would let an engineer of a train know how close his train was to others. However, what impressed me most about Mr. Woods was that Thomas Edison sued Granville Woods claiming that he was the first inventor of the multiplex telegraph, and despite all odds, Woods won.
The next person that I would like to recognize is Alice H. Parker. Ms. Parker who known for her patent for the gas furnace in 1919. Ms. Parker has something in common with our newly elected vice president, who just happens to be the first female and African American, Kamala Harris. Both are graduates of Howard University, a Historically Black College and/or University. Ms. Parker’s heating system used independently controlled burner units that drew in cold air and conveyed the heat through a heat exchanger. Most buildings during this time used coal or wood, but Ms. Parker invention used gas. It was not the first gas patent, but it was the first to contain individually controlled air ducts to transfer heat.
As for my update, the first meeting of the 2022 Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Amendments Subcommittee will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25th, via TEAMS. This meeting is to go over the 2022 Proposed Amendments for the Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes. Below is a link to all the documents:
https://www.dca.ga.gov/node/6988
The meeting invites will go out Friday, Feb. 19th, and to request an invite to the TEAMS meeting, send an email to Christian Poulos at [email protected].
I pray that you and your families remain safe, and I hope to see you very soon.
