President's Report

 Julie Hadfield

Hello All,

Our April meeting will be on April 27th via Zoom. You should be receiving the invite for the meeting in the coming days. The meeting is hosted by ASPE Education (on aspe.org). You must register through them to attend the meeting. Click on the link in the invite, register for the Atlanta Chapter Meeting, and log in to your account to complete the process. You will get a confirmation email and an email closer to the meeting with a link to the presentation. You can also access the presentation by going directly to the Education section of ASPE.org. The website closes registration before the event, so be sure to register at least a day beforehand. Once it is closed, we don’t have the ability to add you in. If you have any questions or problems, reach out to a member of the board.

A couple chapter announcements before Society level announcements. We will be sending out a survey. Please take a couple minutes to take the survey. It is to help the board over the summer to help plan for next year. Fingers crossed we will be meeting in person and have some exciting events for everyone after the summer break. Any events that you would like to see or anything we can do to help you make the most out of your membership, let us know! Second, we will be having officer elections in May. The current candidates were emailed out last week. This does not mean however that you can’t get involved with the board. Whether you want to run for a position or just help out, send me an email.

Society is having a membership drive leading up to the Technical Symposium in San Diego. We can earn points for nonmembers signing up for the Connect free trials, nonmembers who sign up for a membership after signing up for the Connect free trial, and the percentage of chapter members who participate on the Open Forum. The winning chapter will receive full registration to the Symposium and a hotel room for the event. The 2021 Technical Symposium will be September 21-26 in San Diego, California.

Other chapters have been having issues with copy write infringement of the monthly presentations. Please do not copy, photo, or video any of the speaker’s presentations without permission of the speaker.

Society is looking for a couple representatives from Region 3 to be part of the Long-Range Planning Committee. The Long-Range Planning Committee makes the necessary studies to prepare for, and recommend to the board of directors, long-range planning on the aims and activities of the Society that, in the opinion of the committee, would affect the future welfare and growth of the Society. If you are interested in representing the region, let me know.

I want to point out two member benefits that you may not be on your radar. ASPE education has many opportunities to get CEUs and continue to learn new skills while being socially distant. First, there are many on demand webinars to choose whatever strikes your fancy. The second is the Read, Learn, Earn program. CEUs are awarded after reading an article and completing the quiz.

ASPE also offered the Book of the Month benefit for members. Each month there is a discount on a different book from the ASPE bookstore. This month is the digital version of the “Engineered Plumbing Design II.” Use code SPRINGTIME to get 35% off regular member price.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact me.

VP Technical Report

 Dennis M Connelly

April 2021

Hi everyone and a Happy April to you all! It seems that Spring has finally sprung. Days are warming nicely; the dogwoods and azaleas have blossomed, and trees are filling out. Color has returned to our landscape. We even had a relatively short pollen season. I love the newness of Spring! I hope all you are enjoying it as much as I am.

April finds me very busy also, with projects in design and construction CA. I hope all my fellow designers and engineers are staying as busy as me. That would be good news for our contractor and distributor friends as well to get off to a busy summer. Drop me a line and let us know how y’all are doing.

We are hearing good news on the Covid vaccination program. All adults are now eligible in Georgia, so I hope everyone is taking their opportunity to be vaccinated. It will help us all to get back to “normal”. While I have both shots, I am still working from my Basement World Plumbing Headquarters. Now that the State’s Stay at Home mandate has expired, it won’t be long before many start back to the office.  I am sure that I will start transitioning soon myself, but still with masks and some distancing; there is still a high baseline of cases and the virus is spiking up in some areas.

This month is also when the CPD exam is going on. Best wishes and good luck for all who are taking this test this year. The CPDT exam will be in the fall, and we will update that registration and test date as soon as it is published.

Did you read the March issue of ASPE Pipeline? There are some great articles in there. This month there was a good discussion about underground installation of flexible drainage systems, and another about freeze protection of plumbing and fire protection systems. Useful information, especially considering the rough winter we just go through in some areas. There was even an article about SDG 6, which makes us even happier that we live in America. https://www.unwater.org/app/uploads/2021/03/Infographics_Progress-on-water-and-sanitation.png

Our upcoming technical program will be on April 27, 2021 at 7:00 pm EDT. This month we will hear from Atlanta Chapter member Sam Bolt, with Blücher. Sam started his career in our industry with wrenches in hand! A pipe fitter in fire sprinkler sector, he moved to sprinkler hydraulics, pumping, and finally jumped to the manufacturer’s rep sector. Sam has been with Blücher as Southeast Regional Manager for 2-1/2 years. He will present to us on the topic of Stainless Steel Drainage Systems for Hospitals and Medical Centers. With as much focus as we have had on healthcare and hospitals in the past year, this should be an especially timely offering. Please, mark your calendars and join us for an interesting discussion.

As I close, I want to urge everyone to stay connected to ASPE and Atlanta Chapter, especially during this prolonged separation. Our members and affiliates are still working hard every day, many remotely, but still delivering great designs and support for products and resources. Pick up the phone and call a friend or drop an email. Reach out and let us know you are still there, and we will smile on the other end of the line and all feel better for some conversation. Stay in touch, and we will see you again soon.

That is all the news I have today. You can always reach me at [email protected] to talk about ASPE, plumbing, or whatever is on your mind. Drop me a note! Whether you are staying in or going out, please be safe. Wear your mask, wash your hands, cover your sneeze, and keep your distance wherever possible. Thanks.

VP Education Report

 Reza Bahador

Greetings friends,

We are past the Spring Bloom and it is safe to wash our cars and open our windows for some fresh air. We could use another downpour to wash away the last bit of pea soup but the weather this past week couldn’t have been nicer. I hope you all have had a chance to spend some of it outside.

Our CPD exams are over and all of you who took it can take a break from your studies and a deep breath. Turnaround time for results is 6-8 weeks, so hang tight.

If you are renewing your CPD this year, please take a moment to check the recertification page and be sure that you have all that is required to recertify. I had a couple “meeting end” surveys that did not take and needed to be completed. Please be sure that those meetings show a “3 of 3” complete.

For those of you thirsting for knowledge check in on the latest here. There are quick links on the left that will guide you to further education opportunities, on-demand webinars, upcoming webinars and the ever-trusty Read, Learn, Earn.

Until next time,

Reza Bahador, CPD
